LANSING, Mich. — For the first time in recent history Amtrak is not adding more routes this Thanksgiving. Usually, Amtrak adds extra trains the day before Thanksgiving but ridership is down this year.

They haven’t said exactly how many passengers they’ve had this week but a spokesperson says some riders have canceled their trips after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged people to stay home.

“Our ridership is currently about 20% of where we were last Thanksgiving travel period,” said Amtrak Public Relations Manager Kimberly Woods. “So we typically see the greatest demand for travel during Thanksgiving, but this year ridership is currently about 20%.”

AAA projects only a slight drop in the number of Americans traveling for Thanksgiving. They predict it will be around 50 million as opposed to the 55 million that traveled in 2019.
