LANSING, Mich. — One local family welcomed their second child as the first baby of the year to be born at Sparrow Hospital.
Isabella Ann Turpin was born at 2:19 a.m. on Tuesday. The family said her due date was supposed to be on Jan. 6, so having her on New Year's Day didn't cross their minds.
"It's exciting; it's overwhelming," Katelynne Turpin said.
At 6 pounds, 6 ounces, little Isabella sat quietly in the arms of her father, David.
The family, from Bath, said they were happy to have the hospital's first baby of the year.
"She'll have a special day all to herself, a big party every year," Katelynne Turpin said.
While most people were planning to go out on New Year's Eve, this family also had plans, but having a baby wasn't one of them.
"(We were) getting our house together for when she did come. Just finishing her bedroom and around the house things, as normal. I just had a feeling we should go and we came here and walked for a little bit and, next thing we know, she was here."
Turpin says having Isabella was quick and easy. She said there were three other babies that were expected to be born before her daughter, but she edged them out.
The parents said they are just excited to bring her home.
"Just having her here and finally being able to meet her and add her to our family," they said.
The Turpins have another daughter, Mila, who is one and a half. They said she too was born at Sparrow.
As the first baby of the year, Isabella and her family were gifted a car seat, teddy bear and other gifts to take home from the hospital.
