New tech helping break porn addiction

OWOSSO, Mich. — New software created by a mid-Michigan company is helping people break free of an addictive habit.

The new product was launched Tuesday in Shiawassee County.

Some view adult entertainment casually, but for others, it can become a destructive addiction.

"Millions of people out there are being corrupted by pornography."

Which is why Owosso-based company Covenant Eyes has created a software called 'Screen Accountability' to fight porn addiction. The software uses a complex artificial intelligence nuero network.

'From time to time, about once a minute, it takes a screen shot. And it analyzes that screen shot using AI to figure out if there's anything bad on the screen," said Jeff Wofford, Vice President of Product for Covenant Eye.

"It actually uses a training set, a training database of over a million known pictures of porn and a million known pictures that were not porn. The machine learns the difference between them," said Ron DeHaas, CEO of Covenant Eyes.

The program comes up with a mathematical formula that explains and describes the difference. A report is then sent to your friends or family members, or 'accountability partners' with any images the AI thinks might be bad.

The software captures an image on the screen, shrinks it, and then blurs it. The images are blurred so sensitive information like credit cards, financial data, and social security numbers can't be seen.

"The point is almost to have someone looking over your shoulder that provides real accountability, transparency,"

Wofford said they're the first and only company in the state using a neuro network for porn detection.

"It's already helping tons of marriages. Tons of individuals to break free of this temptation and corruption pornography brings into a person's life and mind," Wofford said.
