JACKSON, Mich. — On Wednesday night, police in Jackson were investigating another shooting just as Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies announced a plan to curb gun violence, a plan he wants local businesses to get on board with.
He wants to require businesses in high crime areas to set up security cameras.
A woman was shot on the 900 block of MLK Drive Wednesday evening and police say they need the public to speak up to solve the crime.
This bodes to Mayor Dobies' recent proposal of a camera ordinance to help catch suspects in the act.
Dobies said, "Ordinances that will address getting more cameras on some of the buildings that we have that are problem, buildings within the neighborhoods, and new buildings that are going up."
There are surveillance cameras at Pryor's Barbecue on the city's south side, a security feature the owner says he can't go without.
Lawrence Pryor of Pryor's BBQ said, "I wouldn't have opened the doors without having the cameras up. I feel that security cameras do detour crime."
He added that he has 16 cameras up, "all over."
Pryor says he believes the mayor's plan can help cut back on violent crime but he doesn't think businesses should be required to do it.
"To make it an ordinance, (to) force somebody to put cameras up, I'm not so sure about that because it might burden someone that's really struggling to get their business started."
Mayor Derek Dobies told Fox 47 the ordinance is part of a gun violence package that will be presented before City Council for consideration.
Business owners and residents will have a chance to speak out about the proposal at next Tuesday's council meeting.
Jackson police say the woman shot on MLK is expected to recover and that they are still looking for the suspect.
