LANSING, Mich. — As winter makes a bold return a new shelter is opening to keep people out the cold.

The facility was created to help people who are shut-out with no place to go.

Issues stemming from alcoholism, drug addiction or mental illness can disconnect some people from society, leaving them to a life on the streets.

The City Rescue of Lansing is working to combat the problem of chronic homelessness by opening the first non-barrier shelter in Mid-Michigan.

It’s a center for people who are no longer eligible to lodge at neighboring homeless shelters.

“They don't need identification, they don't need to meet a certain standard of living to be able to come into the facility and so if they've been kicked out of other shelters, they can come”, said Executive Director Mark Criss.

The Outreach Center will start as a temporary overnight shelter and grow into a 24-7 drop-in location where people can shower, wash-clothes and get a break away from the streets.

The Outreach Center is located at the corner of North Larch and Saginaw in Lansing.

It will be open to the public this Monday, January 21st.
