JACKSON, Mich. — A mural depicting the history of the south of Jackson will go up in the spring.

The mural details prominent leaders Teresa Delph, Carl Breeding, Rev Polk Williams and Mrs. Shirley Pitts.

The artwork also includes a combination of images of historical places in the community and the youth.

"I think we need something to inspire our community with hope. and this mural will is an iconic depiction of what our community once used to look like in the past and what it could be in the future," said resident Hakim Crampton.

One of the artists who helped created the mural was Yhosef Ware, who was born and raised on the south side. He says the mural will bring back the memories and the good times.

The mural will be placed on the Martin Luther King Equality Trail near Francis Street.

Barb Shelton thinks the mural is important because the area "is sort of a forgotten area of that doesn't get as much funding or as much attention as other areas."

"The people see that and feel that. And people need to know that they matter," she said.

Vice Mayor and Councilwoman Arlene Robinson adds that the mural will help get the pride back to the south side.

Community members like Tasha Carter believe the mural is a stepping stone the future.

"The momentum will spark some progressive action," she said.

The mural is expected to be put up in the spring, accompanied by a launch party to celebrate.
