New Michigan law toughens classmate assault expulsion

Bill protecting victims signed into law

Michigan students who are convicted of sexually assaulting a classmate will be automatically expelled from the school district under a new bill signed into law Thursday.

Previously a mandatory expulsion only happened if the assault took place on school grounds.

The change comes after a student in the Brighton School District was convicted of raping several of his classmates, then tried to return to the same school as his victims.
