A brand-new math initiative is helping local students soar. Dansville Middle School is one of only a few schools across the country using a unique assessment and intervention tool called "Spring Math."
FOX 47's Lora Painter takes a closer look at this new intervention approach that allows teachers to make an accurate diagnosis of issues students may have, as well as telling them exactly what is needed for each child to reach mastery.
The 2017 M-Step results from the Michigan Department of Education show about a third of the state's sixth and seventh graders are not proficient in math. "Spring Math" seeks to help remedy that.
Dansville teacher Sandy Hunt uses the program everyday with her students. Hunt said, "Part of the problem with math is the skills are not automatic so when you get to higher levels thinking skills they're just not there because the lower skills are not automatic."
