After years of planning, a millage and even a lawsuit, Meridian Township held a grand opening for its new central fire station on Monday.
The old station on Clinton Street closed in 2013 because of mold and water damage.
The biggest holdup to getting the replacement built at the corner of Okemos Road and Central Park Drive was opposition from neighbors worried about the noise.
The chief said why it was worth the fight.
" A goal, a vision since I arrived here in 1998 to provide the facility that I think the township deserves as well as our firefighters"
The new station cost nearly three and a-half million dollars. It complies with the "Americans With Disabilities Act" and has separate facilities for men and women.
