Court documents reveal what police say happened the night Kevin Wirth was murdered.

Saturday May 20, 2017

Wirth and a friend have dinner in Lansing's Old Town. They spend time together. The friend leaves Wirth at his house around 7:30 p.m. Wirth mentions that he's going to the Nuthouse Sports Grill to hang out.

Surveillance video from the Nuthouse shows Wirth meeting a man at the bar. Credit receipts that police were able to obtain the next day reveal the name Larkin H. Neely. Wirth and Neely appear to spend time at the bar together.

Sometime around 10:30 p.m. the two men leave the Nuthouse together and walk down Michigan Avenue.

At 10:59 p.m. there's a text message between the two men.

At 1:00 a.m. there's another text between Wirth and Neely.

Between 2:30 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. Wirth begins sending text and Facebook messages to his friends. He says that he met a man at the Nuthouse, and had taken him home and he feels uncomfortable.

Wirth says he is nervous, and that he has set the alarm on his house. He begins looking for a weapon, and believes his life is in danger.

At 6:41 a.m. the alarm on Wirth's house is triggered, and Lansing Police respond.

When police arrive at the house they find the back door is unsecured. They enter and find Wirth in the living room. Investigators say he had been stabbed several times. Wirth was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surveillance video shows a man who resembles the man Wirth was with at the bar walking westbound in front of the Nuthouse at 6:58 a.m. He continues toward the Radisson.

Police were able to obtain Neely's phone number, and they ping his phone at 12:00 a.m. Sunday night / Monday morning. Police send surveillance and fugitive squad members to locate him, and when Neely leaves his apartment he's taken into custody.

Police say Neely had two very extensive lacerations to his right hand, and records reveal he had been to the Detroit Medical Center.

Police take Neely back to Lansing. He tells officers that he had recently enrolled in classes at Lansing Community College, and had returned to Detroit on Sunday afternoon. After that Neely chooses to wait for a lawyer.

Police obtain a warrant for Neely's home, and during the search they find a motel room key card to the Radisson hotel. When they search the hotel room they locate DNA evidence on the bathroom floor.

Neely has been charged with open murder and armed robbery. He's being held on a $25 million cash bond and is due back in court on June 1st.
