JACKSON, Mich. — A new construction project in Jackson started Monday morning.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has shut down the exit ramp from Interstate-94 East to Cooper Street, just outside of Jackson.

Cooper Street is also closed over the freeway while crews rebuild the ramp.

The work is scheduled to run until June 7.

Cooper Street is the main road leading in and out of Jackson, and the exit ramp is usually busy.

Robert Babcock lives right by the intersection and drives it every day to get into town.

He is worried the construction will cause delays that will lead to more traffic crashes.

"That is always going to be a big issue. Then you have people that are so much in a hurry, that their life matters more, they will cut you off," said Babcock.

A store manager also said she might lose business if people will be avoiding the area to find a different route.

MDOT says this is going to make the intersection safer and easier to get through.

It will have a detour posted.
