Driving with a dog in your lap could be illegal in Michigan if one state lawmaker gets her way.
Democratic State Representative LaTanya Garrett (Detroit), introduced a bill that would ban anyone from operating a motor vehicle with a dog in their lap.
Garrett says dogs on laps are just another distraction for drivers, and
says her legislation is for the safety of everyone on the road.
Some veterinarians agree saying, drivers who are behind the wheel with their dogs on their laps, can barely see over their pet.
If the bill is passed, it would be a civil infraction for anyone caught driving with a dog on their lap. Violators would pay $100 for the first offense and $200 for any other offenses. The bill has been sent to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Vets say the safe way to travel with your pet is to use a harness, seat belts and crates.
