State lawmakers are taking up a new bill that would ban people for using their cell phones for any reason while driving.
Under current state law, texting and driving is illegal, but the new bill would add penalties for making phone calls, checking email or using social media.
Drivers would still be able to make hands-free calls using a Bluetooth device.
The new bill would make using your cell phone while driving a $250 fine for the first offense and $500 as well as a point on your license for the second offense.
The House Transportation Committee is expected to vote on the bill very soon.
