CHARLOTTE, Mich. — A man catches a local septic tank service, Ball Septic & Tank Services, company dumping waste near his backyard.
Fox 47 learned that the company dumped the waste in an area that they didn't have permission to use. The company has applied for the right to dump there but it has not been approved yet. Nearby neighbors are not too happy after watching the dumping go down.
"I was pretty surprised to see that they were going that way," said Derek Ruthruff, next door neighbor.
Derek Ruthruff lives right next to Ball Septic & Tank Services. He caught the company dumping something in the field next door. He said that waste would then drain into a nearby stream, and neighbors are afraid it might be hazardous.
"I grew up in this area. I can tell you that most of the kids that do grow up here do spend significant time in that stream," said Kevin Hailey, owns property nearby.
Fox 47 stopped by the company's place and they told us that employee will be terminated. The company is working on the cleanup and they made sure to tell the neighbors.
"I don't really feel differently. He didn't seem too apologetic, didn't feel sincere. It seems like he is going to do what he is going to do, regardless of what the neighbors think," said Ruthruff.
The Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) confirmed that the company dumped up to 3,000 gallons of septage which is not hazardous. The department is investigating and will ask the company to explain what happened, how it happened, their clean up process, and preventative measures. The company said they are working with the Barry-Eaton County Health Department and EGLE.
If found in violation, the company could be fined, they could lose their license or even face criminal charges.
