Tuesday morning a man and woman were found dead near their home on Marion Avenue in a possible murder-suicide.
A father who lives in the area says he and his daughter could have been caught in the middle of it.
Around 8:30 a.m. Derrick Morell Smith, 47, chased his wife Adriann Lakisha Smith, 39, down Marion Rd toward Victor Ave on Lansing's south side. Derrick shot his wife in the road, and then shot himself.
Neil Windless lives just feet away from where the shooting happened. He says it's usually a very quiet neighborhood. Other neighbors agree that it's not something they're used to seeing in their area.
The body of Adriann Smith was found a path that Windless says he takes when he walks his daughters to the bus stop. He's thankful his daughters didn't have to witness the shooting. "Kind of troubling for me. I was just dropping my daughters off, and what if the bus would've been late or I'm walking back and whatever happened down there I could've been a part of it. It's scary."
Windless didn't witness the crime, but he did hear the gunshots. "As soon as I was putting my coat away I just heard a succession of gunshots." In a matter of seconds the usually quiet neighborhood became the scene of a violent crime.
Another neighbor told FOX 47 News that the couple was known to argue a lot. While others were in complete shock when they heard about the shooting.
Police are still investigating, however they would confirm that Adriann had two kids that lived in the home part-time. They were at school at the time of the shooting. Police will not share anymore information regarding the children.
Police still want to talk with anyone who saw the shooting or might have more information. If you know anything you should call Detective Sergeant Jeromy Churchill at 517-483-6816
