EAST LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing Police say they are questioning a man matching the description of a suspect wanted for assault and robbery. People who live near the apartment say although he's in custody, they're still shaken up.

Police say they were called to the 25 East apartment complex on Abbot Road, just south of Lake Lansing Road, around 6 a.m. Friday.

According to police, three women in the apartment said they were sexually assaulted by a man who had a gun.

Police say the man also stole various electronics from the apartment.

Mitch Carr lives in the apartment just above where it happened and says he was shocked to wake up to police carrying large guns.

"We didn't know what was going on, but we could like hear girls below us like crying. Now that we know what's happened. It's really heartbreaking to know," said Carr.

Zaria Phillips lives right next door to the alleged victims. She said her door was one of the doors police knocked on as soon as it happened Friday morning.

"I heard crying next door it was like very loud crying so I peeked out and I heard them calling the police saying that someone was robbed so I went to check on them and one of the girls was bleeding from her head," said Phillips.

The three women received medical attention for non-life threatening injuries.

The apartment was not believed to have been locked.

Even though police believe they have the man who did it, Phillips says she just can't understand how something like this happened.

"I always lock my doors but the fact that this person got into our building in the first place is terrifying. I've been calling up the leasing office saying 'I need you guys to change these locks. My locks, the building locks. Change the locks,'" said Phillips.

The apartment complex told Fox 47 they were alerting residents of the assault and reminding them of the importance of locking doors and staying alert.

There will be counselors available at the complex for those that need it.

It is still unclear whether the women knew the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody around 1 p.m. Friday.

His name has not been released until he is formally charged.

His arraignment is expected to take place this weekend.
