Neighborhood wants bus stop changed after hit and run

A woman and her daughter were struck by a car waiting for the school bus Monday morning. Dave Trevino is the father and husband of the victims. His daughter was released from the hospital Monday evening.

“Thankfully my daughter is home safe,” Trevino said. “She was hit as was my wife. My wife is still in the hospital, we have the best of hopes for her but she's got a lot of injuries to get through at this time."

He says it was two separate incidents. The driver struck his daughter, continued on to flee the scene, then struck his wife. He says his wife has injuries to her head.

He and neighbors say the bus stop is just too dangerous.

"I'm just surprised it hasn't happened or had some close calls earlier,” Cheryl Savage, a parent of a Haslett student said. “And maybe the bus stop being moved back into the neighborhood where it's safe probably would've prevented that."

Savage says she and 12 other families carpool their kids to school every day just to avoid that bus stop. She says it's too close to the road and it's off a tight curve.

"Obviously that bus stop isn't safe," Savage said.

Trevino plans on making changes.
"I'm gonna talk to the school board about that,” Trevino said. “There are safer places where we can do this. We should also be looking at the driving"

Because even though it's only a 30 mile per hour speed limit, he and other neighbors say people take the curve too fast
"It's kind of a blind curve there, there's no sidewalk and you will see for whatever reason, people just tend to that curve over the white line," Calvin Meyers, who lives nearby said.

"In the end of it, it all comes down to one thoughtless driver that drove away,” Trevino said. “When a normal human being would stop and see what they had done."

Meridian Township police have a suspect in custody. The person's name will not be released until they're arraigned. We'll let you know when that happens.
