EAST LANSING, Mich. — Thursday marked the one year anniversary since former MSU gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to life in prison in an Ingham County court room.
Survivors of his sexual assaults, and their supporters, gathered on campus to celebrate justice, and reflect on the year gone by.
On this day back in 2018 Judge Rose Marie Aquillina handed Nassar a 40-175 years, calling his fate a death warrant after 156 survivors told their stories of sexual abuse.
The impact statements put the focus on MSU's leadership, pushing out former President Lou Ana K. Simon and introducing John Engler as interim president.
Thursday night Nassar survivors and supporters met at the steps of the Hannah Administration building demanding a change in the culture and asking for a transparent presidential search.
Faculty members and survivors say they want an external candidate who can objectively work through a culture change at the university.
MSU board members are expected to select a new president by June.
