LANSING, Mich. — One person has died in Michigan from the listeria outbreak.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eight people are reported to be infected with listeria in four states.
One other case has been confirmed in Michigan, in addition to the recent death.
The patients all reported eating different types of meats and cheeses from deli counters at different stores, which is why health officials haven't named any stores or deli products that may have spread the bacteria.
The CDC is not telling people to stop eating food prepared at delis either.
The CDC says symptoms of listeria can be different depending on the person and the part of the body its affecting.
Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Symptoms usually start one to four weeks after eating contaminated food.
Health officials say people should clean their refrigerators, kitchen counters, utensils and other surfaces that could come in contact with deli products because listeria bacteria can survive at very low temperatures, and quickly spread to other foods and surfaces.
The CDC says the people most at risk are pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems.
