LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University’s new president is doing something that other university leaders before him haven't.
He’s meeting face-to-face with sexual assault survivors for a candid conversation.
MSU President Samuel Stanley is working with campus support groups to build trust and develop new systems to assist survivors of sexual assault.
The university is wants to reverse the current status of the culture by listening to victims of sexual violence.
The meetings are meant to get a better understanding on how to properly investigate abuse and support survivors.
“We're in a position where there's been a lot of institutional betrayal and a lot of institutional trauma,” said MSU Center for Survivors Director Tana Fedewa.
“We have to start by really understanding the whole scope of what has happened.”
President Stanley will host two more meetings. It’s open to survivors and family members.
This event is not for the public.
Attendees are encouraged to RSVP.
Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library for survivors who wish to discuss the Nassar case.
Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019, 6 to 8 p.m. via Zoom. Zoom is an online, web-based meeting for survivors who may not feel comfortable attending a meeting in person.
