LANSING, Mich. — Nine long months of waiting has ended as the MSU Spartans are kicking off their 2019 football season-- and MSU police say this is an exciting time on campus.
MSU police said they want to make sure everybody has fun responsibly.
Multiple agencies are on campus assisting police to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Tailgating is allowed on campus--but police are reminding people that you must be 21 years or older to consume alcohol. You cannot drink alcohol at Munn Field and you're not allowed to bring alcohol into the stadium.
In addition, police say it's important to come with a plan in mind and be with people you know.
"Important to, you know, as your are celebrating a tailgate, do it with people that you know. Always have the buddy system. You know, and you kinda walk together to the stadium and walk back together. That way, cause sometimes people forget where they park or sometimes they get confused because they've never been on campus before. So that's why it's really important to have a strategy," MSU Police Captain Doug Monette said.
For Erika Myers though, tailgating is a homecoming event.
“It’s homecoming every weekend for us, when we tailgate, it’s not just the one weekend, truly it’s coming home 100% of the time for us," Myers said.
For some tailgaters, being a Spartan is all in the family. Myer's sister, Janane went to MSU for a year, and her daughter also attends the school.
“She was a little nervous going here at first, but now this is home for her, she loves it and actually I have two younger daughters that are on their way to coming here too," Janane Berceau said.
The sisters are part of the green flamingos, the group they formed with their family and friends. The group comes every weekend and has a different theme. This week's theme is college bar night.
"That’s what we used to do when we were here, happy hour chicken fingers and mini tacos and things like that,” Janane said.
The two say tailgating has changed a little bit over the years but their love for the Spartans remains the same.
"Go green, go white." Janane said.
For those who are new to tailgating, however, MSU police don't hesitate to approach an officer if you are confused or lost.
The student entrance has opened but other fans will not be able to get into Spartan Stadium until 5:30 p.m. For the rest of the season tailgating lots are open at 7 a.m. for a noon kickoff, 9a.m. for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, and lots open at 1 p.m. for a night game.
