LANSING, Mich. — Just under three weeks into the school year and MSU police are investigating a report of a sexual assault on campus.
Police were called to campus near the pavilion located on the southern part of campus just before 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon and they're still looking for the alleged attacker.
"The officers responded quickly and decisively and its an ongoing investigation at this time," Captain Doug Monette, of MSU Police said.
Monette won't say much at this time including any information on the victim or the attacker, or exactly what the victim says happened.
"Its an ongoing investigation, at the appropriate time, we will release that information," Captain Monette said.
Police did say they are looking for a white man, about 5'11 with dark hair wearing a green and black plaid shirt and jeans.
The pavilion was hosting its fall horse show throughout Sunday, but Monette couldn't confirm it took place during the event.
"We have deployed the appropriate amount of resources to investigate this incident, and while doing so we will continue to follow up with the leads we have obtained," Monette said.
The fact that this happened just weeks into the semester and in broad daylight has MSU students concerned.
"People are just getting acquainted on campus again, we have a bunch of new freshmen. Its just scary like already there's so much crime. Not something you want to see, its not very welcoming," Laila Klaveins, a sophomore at MSU said.
An MSU alert was issued on social media just before 6 p.m. on Sunday. Both students say they wish police would have notified the student body sooner, but are glad an investigation is underway.
"It makes you feel a little more at ease because its like 'okay they are notifying me so they are going to do an investigation' and then you feel a little bit better," Maria Manolias, a sophomore at MSU said.
Police said the assault was reported on Sunday and occurred at the South Research Pavilion and Livestock Buildings located at 4301 Farm Lane.
