LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State Basketball team always pride itself on being like a family, but this season that takes on a more literal meaning as head coach Tom Izzo is welcoming his son to the basketball program.
He might not have been the star player for the Lansing Catholic Cougars last season, but Steven Izzo is joining the Michigan State basketball team as a walk on.
The Izzo's did not plan on him playing as a walk on until the idea came about in the past year or so when Steven started enjoying playing basketball more.
Izzo believe this is a great opportunity to spend more time with his son.
"The chance to go to practice and the weight room and see him after all the time I haven't been able to see her has been a real joy and a real privilege. There's going to be days where he's going to be mad at me and a lot of days where I'm mad at him, but at least I'm doing it now together," Izzo said.
Izzo said once Steven steps on the court, whatever he says goes just like the other players. It will be fun to follow along with how that goes during practice.
The Spartans open up with an exhibition game against Albion on Oct. 29 at the Breslin Center.
