A Michigan State Police trooper has been found to be at-fault for a multi-car crash that killed a man July 19, according to a preliminary report from state police.
As a result, state police said it suspended the trooper pending completion of the investigation and a review by the Clinton County Prosecutor's Office.
State police said a preliminary investigation found that shortly after 8 p.m. the trooper was responding, with emergency lights and siren activated, to a retail theft in progress.
The trooper was westbound on Cutler Road when he entered the intersection striking the rear of a semi-truck that was traveling northbound on Business 127.
The semi then hit David. G. Engel's vehicle, which was stopped southbound on Business 127 and was waiting to turn left onto Cutler Road.
Engel, 26, of DeWitt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The trooper was treated and released from the hospital. The semi-truck driver was uninjured in the crash.
The name of the trooper has not yet been released.
