Eastern Michigan University has announced MSNBC political analyst Joy-Ann Reid will deliver the keynote during the school's annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
The 2018 celebration runs from Jan. 11-16. Reid's address will be given Jan. 15 in the Student Center Auditorium on the school's Ypsilanti campus.
Eastern Michigan says the theme is "Live the Legacy: Look Back, Be Present, Move Forward." The theme and keynote speaker were selected by the MLK Celebration Planning Committee after receiving recommendations last spring from more than 200 students, faculty and staff.
Next year marks the 50th anniversary of King's assassination. The civil rights icon was shot to death on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
The third Monday in January has been established as a national holiday to commemorate King's birthday.
