Temperatures are warming up and many motorcyclists are taking advantage by dusting off the bike and taking it for a spin.
With that comes the added awareness for drivers out on the road.
Cindy Burnett has been riding for over 10 years and would be lying if she said her life had never flashed before her eyes while on the road.
“There was a basketball bouncing in the back of a truck and it kept bouncing until it came out and it hit me right in my front tire,” said Burnett. “The ball took off and I was okay but situations happen so the biker has to be alert.”
But so should drivers on the road as well.
Too many times Burnett says she's found drivers swerving on the road who were texting and driving.
“Its life or death and until their in an accident because they're doing it, said Burnett.
Chad Teachout is part of the state’s motorcycle training program. Teachout says it’s important to have the right gear before heading out on the road.
“There is a lot of good looking high visibility gear out there and it doesn't have to look like a typical construction work vest that a lot of people think it is but it is effective,” said Teachout. “It can save your life in the event of a multi car crash where the car driver just simply didn't see the motorcyclist.”
Chances are drivers may not hear a motorcycle either.
“If the motorcyclist is coming at you the exhaust is facing the other way so you're typically not going to hear it,” said Teachout.
Awareness of others on the road and proper education are two simple things everyone can do to stay safe this summer.
