Motel where 6 killed in fire inspected by state in 2016

Posted

The Southwest Michigan motel where six people were killed in a weekend fire was inspected by the state two years ago.

A mother and five of her children were killed in the fire at the Comso Extended Stay Motel Saturday morning.

Many of the residents in the motel have claimed the fire alarms did not go off at the time of the fire.

According to WOOD-TV, a 2016 inspection done at the motel by Sodus Township found a number of safety hazards, including an alarm system that wasn't in compliance.

But a follow-up report a few months later by the state showed those violations, including the fire alarm system, were fixed.

Investigators say the fire was likely accidental.

Officials say it will be several more days before they have answers about the alarm system.
