The East Lansing Police Department say there's an increase in vehicle thefts but it's not cars or trucks.

Police say thieves are on the hunt for mopeds.

“I don't lock up my moped”, said MSU student Sawyer Kulman.

“I don't really have a reason for not locking it up. Just kind of trusting people I guess.”

Jack Uecker lives in East Lansing near campus. He says he heard about the thefts through a friend.

“Actually one of my friends…saw somebody attempting to steal one”, said Uecker.

“He said they were trying to hotwire it or something and something wasn't working and he saw them run away.”

Deputy Police Chief Steve Gonzalez told News 10 thieves are looking for an easy opportunity.

Police say U-Locks provide the best protection.

Officers say they don't recommend cord locks because they can be snapped with bolt cutters and similar tools.

Police are also warning owners to never bring mopeds in the house because the bikes run on gasoline and can be a fire hazard.

East Lansing Police say moped thefts are classified as vehicle thefts and can carry felony charges.
