The amount of solid waste in Michigan’s landfills increased last year.

The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy released its annual report Wednesday, which found there was a 6.2% increase in waste compared to 2018. Michigan residents and business threw out 8.5% more in 2019, but waste imported from other states and Canada was down by about 1%.

Imported waste takes up about 22% of all waste in Michigan landfills. The largest imported source came from Canada, at more than 17%. Ohio exported the most out of all the states.

EGLE’s report is based off information Michigan’s 66 landfills are required to submit every year.
