Residents across Michigan are invited to raise awareness and work to find a cure for blood cancer with a virtual walk scheduled October 1.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society says due to the pandemic they've created the 2020 Light the Night event and for the first time it's virtual to highlight Blood Cancer Awareness Month in September. The event will allow everyone to participate safely this year.

“While the pandemic has canceled many things, cancer is not one of them and cancer patients need our help now more than ever,“ said Chad Creekmore, LLS Michigan-Indiana Region executive director. “Every three minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every nine minutes someone loses their battle with these deadly diseases. Light The Night plays a critical role in helping raise awareness and fund research and treatment advances, not just for blood cancer but for many other forms of cancer as well, while serving as a lifeline for financial support and treatment for Michigan cancer families, especially with the additional challenges of this pandemic.”

Those who register and raise $100 or more will be mailed a t-shirt and a colored lantern reflecting why they've joined the fight against blood cancer.
