DETROIT (WXYZ) — Michigan State Police released a warning to people on Saturday night telling them to be cautious of a possible cop impersonator in the area of I-96 and Davison Freeway who has been making traffic stops.

He's described as a white man wearing a black uniform, and driving a black charger with red and blue lights.

The man has been identifying himself as a state trooper, however, MSP notes that their troopers do not use unmarked vehicles to conduct traffic stops. A real MSP trooper's vehicle will have either a red overhead light or be blue in color with no overhead light.

MSP provides this advice if you are stopped by a questionable vehicle:

  • Slow down and turn on your flashers
  • Drive to a public area.
  • Call 911 and explain your concerns. The dispatcher will confirm the identity of the officer. #DriveMichiganSafely
