LANSING, Mich. — Michigan restaurants and bars are pushing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to let them reopen for dine-in service May 29, three weeks from now.
An industry group on Friday released a “roadmap” to reopening, with guidance such as requiring masks and gloves for workers and keeping customers, tables and bar stools 6 feet apart.
Justin Winslow, president and CEO of the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association, said 20 restaurants a day are going out of business this month. The group is talking with municipalities and the state’s Liquor Control Commission on expediting the process for opening patios, including in parking lots and streets closed to traffic.
Gov. Whitmer on Thursday outlined six stages of allowing economic activity and said Michigan is in the third stage. Bars and restaurants could reopen in the fifth phase, but there is no date certain on when.
Winslow said restaurant operators “need a chance to open their doors to prove to the public that they can provide a safe space to go out and have a meal, for customers to go back to their favorite restaurants.”
