LANSING, Mich. — There are now 5,372 deaths and 56,014 cases of coronavirus reported in Michigan, according to new numbers released by the state on Thursday.
That's up 38 deaths and 406 cases from Wednesday. The new numbers include 17 deaths identified during a vital records review, which means 21 deaths were reported on Wednesday.
33,168 have recovered from the virus, the state said. Those numbers are updated every Saturday. Recovery numbers include people who are still living 30 days out from the onset of their illness.
The City of Detroit reported no new deaths for the second time this month. Though four deaths were reported, they all happened before Wednesday.
Malls in metro Detroit began opening up on Thursday, and on Friday, people can begin having nonessential dental, medical and veterinary procedures.
Michigan also announced Secretary of State branches will begin to open on June 1 by appointment only. The appointments will only be for essential services that can't be done online.
The state continues to fall in the number of cases in the U.S., and now ranks eighth in the number of cases, but still has the fourth-most deaths in the country.
On Wednesday, Michigan State announced plans to resume in-person instruction during the fall semester, starting in September. It was the latest of universities to plan for on-campus instruction in the fall.
