Three Congressmen from Michigan were at a charity baseball practice Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire.

Rep. Jack Bergman who represents northern Michigan's 1st congressional district says he was next in line to bat when the shooting started.

"It all happened very quickly," Bergman said. "Second shot rang out and it was pretty obvious at that point that we had a shooter so everybody started to scramble."

Bergman says he couldn't see the shooter so he dropped to the ground and tried to find shelter.

"I kicked into my marine mode and went into a low crawl behind the first base dugout along with a couple of others," he added.

That's where the freshman lawmaker hid until he thought it was safe to move.

"After a couple more minutes it appeared as though the shooter was trying to work his way down, if you will, third base line outside of the fence and toward the back stop. So we scrambled then into the first base dugout and at that point the capitol police were engaging him."

Bergman credits that response for helping save his life and so many on the field.

"They were the true heroes today because had they not been there this truly could have been a massacre," Bergman added.

Local Reps Mike Bishop and John Moolenaar were also at the game. Both released statements asking to keeping the victims in your thoughts and prayers.
