LANSING, Mich. — Michigan is ranked number eight for victims of "catfishing" schemes.

People with online dating profiles are getting hooked on falling for people with fake identities online.

Usually these fake profiles are scams for money, romance or even physical harm.

Last year, Michigan had 461 reported victims who were caught in a catshishing scam.

Some signs someone might be getting catfished are the person they're talking to online will ask for money, they always make an excuse not to meet in person or over video chat, or if they say they're stationed overseas.

Also if their profile seems too good to be true.

Some people who catfish have low-self esteem and take on someone else's identity who is more successful than they are.
