An update on the ongoing fight to change up the rules to allow multiple liquor stores to do business on the same corner.
The Michigan Liquor Control Commission voted to get rid of the so-called 'Half-Mile Rule' on Tuesday. That's according to The Detroit News.
The rule has been in place for nearly 40 years and requires at least a half-mile distance between liquor stores.
Local business owners packed a public hearing on the rule. They're saying the rule protects communities, businesses and gives them room for potential competition.
But businesses like CVS and Kroger are in support of scrapping the rule, arguing it keeps them from their stores being able to sell liquor.
Now approval from the panel allows the rule-making progress to move forward. But state lawmakers could still step in before the rule is officially scrapped.
