LANSING, Mich. — This week on Michigan Made we are spotlighting a local boy, George that recently won the National Grand STEM Challenge sponsored by Sylvan Learning of Jackson/Lansing & administered/judged by the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and funded by the Lemelson Foundation.

Since 2016 Sylvan Learning has sponsored a Grand STEM Challenge competition across North America. The weeklong summer camp and STEM contest is held at participating Sylvan Learning Centers. Each year the camper’s get a new design challenge and competition based on the Engineering Design Process. This year’s design and competition theme was “Invent Your World with Electronic Textiles”. Students were asked to create a piece of wearable technology that solved a problem. George’s winning invention was a fighter jet pilot helmet that senses when the pilot has passed out and alerts the co-pilot.

Grand STEM Challenge partner, Lemelson-MIT encourages students to invent and develop their hands-on skills in STEM. Inspired by the belief that invention can solve many of the biggest economic and social challenges of our time, the Foundation helps the next generation of inventors and their inventions to flourish. https://lemelson.mit.edu/
