Over half of last year's fire deaths in Michigan were aged 60 and older, that's why fire departments across the state are urging everyone to test out their older loved ones smoke detectors.
The "Press To Test" campaign is part of the Push the Button Challenge. To participate, all you have to do is post a video of you in the home of an elderly loved one, making sure their smoke alarms are working.
Then post the video on your social media accounts with the hashtag #PressToTest to urge others to do the same.
"We know that the elderly in Michigan are vulnerable, and we want to make sure that they have working smoke alarms to give them time to get out. We know that it takes them longer to get out. So its very important that they have working smoke alarms in their home," State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer said.
Homes should have a smoke alarm on every level, so make sure you check them all. In addition, smoke alarms need to be replaced every ten years.
You can also post your video on the "Push the Button Challenge" Facebook page.
