LANSING, Mich. — After almost 151 years after it was created, a Michigan fire department has hired its first female firefighter.

Raelyn DeGroff said she was destined to join what she calls the "family business" with the Paw Paw Fire Department. Her grandfather, father and uncle all served on the force.

DeGroff said she used to take rides on the truck with her dad and thinks everyone should pursue their dream.

"I get treated like just the rest of the guys, I have to work hard and prove myself. If you can dream it you can do it, and it has been my dream since I was eight and I'm here," DeGroff said.

The firefighter hopes she won't be the last member of her family to be a Paw Paw firefighter.

The department also recently hired the first fourth-generation firefighter in its history.
