LANSING, Mich. — PFAS has been talked about a lot lately and a few Michigan congressmen want to make it easier to find the chemical in our water.
Congressmen Dan Kildee and Jack Bergman have introduced a bill that would require the U.S. Geological Survey to check nationwide for PFAS in the water. That bill got a hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday.
PFAS was used in firefighting foam on military bases and has been found in runoff water in some areas.
Federal agencies said consuming PFAS can negatively affect a person's health. Kildee said Thursday's hearing is a good sign that the government could be on its way to testing PFAS in the water.
"The important thing is that people understand the threat and know if they're being exposed to PFAS so first they can take steps to protect themselves and their family," Kildee said.
