Now to one of the day's most important stories: Potato day at the Capitol.
The Michigan Potato Industry Commission set up shop at the north lawn, serving up free french fries, potato chips and gourmet potato dishes.
Organizers say it's all about letting people in Michigan know that the potato farming industry in Michigan is big.
"Consumers don't really know that we grow potatoes in the state," said Nate Chesher, marketing manager of Michigan Potatoes. "What you see on the store shelf when you go there is usually a Michigan potato."
Michigan is the country's leading producer of potatoes that are turned into potato chips.
Michigan farmers harvest about 2 billion pounds of spuds every year.
