The Michigan Treasury Department has a warning about tax scams.

Experts say the first part of the year is prime-time for phone scams and phishing emails to get your personal information.

If you get a call from someone who says they're from the State Treasury, keep in mind that they will never start a call or email asking for personal information.

They will also never demand immediate payment, ask for a credit or debit card number over the phone, or threaten to have you arrested for not paying.

They will also never demand taxes be paid without giving you an opportunity to question or appeal the amount.
