A Michigan man and woman lined up for the start of the Detroit Free Press - Chemical Bank Marathon as boyfriend and girlfriend on Sunday but ended the race as something else.
The couple became the first to do something other than running during the Detroit race, they got married.
Whitney Black and Steven Phillips of the Grand Rapids area tied the knot half-way through the more than 26-mile race.
Their ceremony lasted all but five minutes with some family and friends present.
When asked why a marathon, the new bride said, "We challenge each other to do better in every way."
McCann Black, Whitney's brother said, "It was surreal for a number of reasons. One, the setting, just the madness of the marathon itself. But to see my baby sister being married, it's a lot to take but I'm just so happy for her."
The newlyweds ran the second half of the marathon together as husband and wife.
They had initially wanted to keep the wedding a secret so they could surprise everyone, however, they ended up sharing their plans with family and friends so they could watch the ceremony.
