A couple from Adrian is heading to the Dream Cruise for the first time in their 1966 Pontiac GTO.

But for them, they’re celebrating their love of the car and the love they share.

“I’ve got my girl and I got my car,” said David Slack.

And that's all he needs, he said after a whirlwind romance centering around a 1966 Pontiac GTO.

David and Patti used to date in high school back in the late 1960s. They were each other’s first boyfriend and girlfriend, and a GTO was his first car.

They used to hang out in their car listening to their favorite song.

“Was a ‘66 GTO, so we drove around the GTO, down Chene Street through Hamtramck and on 8 Mile Road,” David said.

Patti’s family moved away from Detroit and that was the end of their romance, until more than 50 years later.

“To me it’s soulmates,” she said. “It’s something that in your soul that nothing ever changes.”

After living separate lives, Patti found David on Facebook. Patti said she thought, “Oh my Gosh, he hasn’t changed at all.”

They got married two years ago.

“One thing was missing – we didn’t have the GTO to bring back a lot of our memories,” David said.

They went looking for the classic car similar to the one David had. They finally found and bought one last Fall for $18,000, which is a big difference from the $2,500 he paid the first time.

“If you look at the license plate it will say ‘MY G1RL’ on there,” David said.

After fixing it up, they’re ready to go to their first Woodward Dream Cruise.

“Just bring back some memories that we had when we were kids,” David said.

Patty added, “Even when he tells the story, I’m simply amazed every time I hear it because you don’t believe that it could actually happen."

The couple will be at the Woodward Dream Cruise at:
Village Players of Birmingham
34660 Woodward Ave
Birmingham, MI 48009
Saturday from 9:45 AM to 7:15 PM
