MT. PLEASANT — A bakery worker at Meijer in Mt. Pleasant has been diagnosed with Hepatitis A, and state health officials warn anyone who consumed any baked goods made at the in-store bakery could be at risk.
According to The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Agriculture And Rural Development, the employee works at the Meijer located at 1015 Pickard St. in Mt. Pleasant. Anyone who has consumed baked goods such as bread or rolls from this location between Aug. 23 and Sept. 20, should contact their healthcare provider.
Freezing will not kill the virus.
Meijer is providing a hepatitis A vaccine free of charge to its employees and customers at the Mount Pleasant location. No hepatitis A illnesses have been linked to the Meijer worker, state officials said. But they are urging people who may have bought baked goods to throw them away and watch for symptoms of an infection.
Symptoms include dark urine, fever, diarrhea, and yellow skin and eyes.
There is no danger from bakeries at other Meijer locations or from other departments at the store.
State health officials say while vaccination provides the best protection, frequent hand washing with soap and warm water after using the bathroom and before preparing food can help prevent the spread of Hepatitis A. Appropriately cooking foods can also help prevent infection.
Anyone who develops symptoms of hepatitis A infection should stay home and contact their healthcare provider.
