Medical pot shops could reopen without licensing

LANSING, Mich. — The State Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs is planning to recommend a proposal Wednesday to the Medical Marijuana Licensing Board that will help maintain patient access to medical marijuana.

This would allow facilities without a license to reopen without it being blocked from getting a license in the future.

State regulatory officials and Governor Gretchen Whitmer say they support allowing facilities open until at least the end of March without being penalized.

Unlicensed pot shops were given a December 31 deadline to either shutdown until they got a state license or jeopardize their chance of getting a license at all.

Governor Whitmer says allowing the businesses to operate until a March 31 deadline will help maintain patient access to marijuana.

Once LARA makes its recommendation to the Medical Marijuana Licensing Board, the board would have to vote in favor of it for it to take effect.

LARA's proposal would also allow licensed facilities to source their products from caregivers without being penalized.

The board meets Wednesday.
