Flat tires, backups and even several crashes…all because of what’s being called a Texas-sized pothole.
I-69 is expected to be back to normal right now.
This comes after a bridge joint gave out, damaging the road and causing quite a problem for drivers earlier today.
"We had to send our bridge team out to repair the joint," said MDOT Spokesperson Aaron Jenkins. "They put fast-curing concrete on the actual joint that was broken."
Despite the six to eight reports this morning of flat tires, mile-long backups, and even a three-car pileup, Jenkins says that the joint failure could have been much worse.
"Luckily it was identified and we got out there quick enough to fix it before anything else could have happened."
He says that he's thankful crews were able to make it there. A road crew left from St. John’s on an emergency basis to repair the joint.
"That’s not very typical, but with the infrastructure and neglect that we've had over the last however many years, it's something that could happen...and we make sure we can get there immediately to repair the problem."
Jenkins says this morning's joint failure is not the only defect in Michigan’s roadways, but one of many that need to be fixed sooner rather than later.
"Drastic changes need to happen so that we can have the funding that's necessary for adequate road repairs."
