LANSING, Mich. — Mayor Schor has joined 214 mayors from across the country by signing the U.S. Conference of Mayors letter that calls for immediate Senate action on bipartisan gun safety legislation.
The legislation has already been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
"Today, I joined 213 other Mayors, Democrats, Republicans and Independents, to call on the U.S. Senate to take up and pass commonsense, bipartisan gun safety legislation," said Mayor Schor.
The letter pushes for the Senate Majority and Democratic Leaders to immediately call the Senate back to session to take up and pass bills to help reduce gun violence.
"We have seen terrible instances of gun violence nationally, and Lansing is not immune," Schor said. "This week, we witnessed a tragedywhen an argument turned deadly due to the prevalence of illegal guns."
The two bipartisan bills that previously passed the U.S. House of Representatives: H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019, and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019. H.R. 8 would require all firearm purchases to have background checks, prohibit unlicensed transfers of guns through unregulated secondary sales and increase law enforcement ability to trace crime guns. H.R. 1112 would extend background check period from 3 to 10 business days.
"These bills will reduce gun violence in our country by strengthening background checks, and closing loopholes which allow people to legally bypass these background checks. I applaud the U.S. House, especially Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, for already passing these solutions. Now it is time for the U.S. Senate to follow suit," added Schor.
