Mayor fires back at chamber over roads

Earlier this week the chamber sent the city a letter asking for repairs between Pennsyvania Ave and US-127.

Mayor Virg Bernero told us plans were already on the books to work on Michigan but he's limited in what he can do and the city's funds are also limited.

"Police and fire are 56-percent of my budget. You think that I'm going to cut police and fire so that I can fund roads? I'm not going to do it. I've got to answer 911 calls," said Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero. "The roads are a priority, there's no question about that. But do you think I can just eliminated parks and recreation for young people? The things we put on... close our community centers and just do nothing but roads? I can't do that. I have more than just a roads department."

Bernero also says he hopes people are sending letters to the state legislature and the governor too, asking for more money to improve the roads.

Governor Snyder did sign a new road funding plan into the law about 10 months ago, which is expected to generated $1.2 billion. But experts say we really need about $2 billion a year to maintain our roads.
