Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies has asked the Michigan Civil Rights Commission to investigate discrimination claims against Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand.

Dobies acknowledged on his Twitter account that he sent a letter to Michigan Civil Rights Commission on Monday.

FOX 47 has obtained Dobies' letter which you can read by clicking here.

Sheriff Rand has been under scrutiny in recent weeks after a federal lawsuit and audio recordings revealed he made sexist, racist, and homophobic comments.

The recordings were released by the attorney for Lt. Tommy Schuette, an officer who's suing Rand in federal court. Schuette's lawsuit claims Rand is a "multifaceted bigot" who created a hostile work environment, harassed him for his ability.

Last month, Sheriff Rand issued an apologyfor his actions but said he has no plans to resign.

Jackson City Council members passed a resolution last month to send a letter to Governor Rick Snyder, requesting he remove Sheriff Rand from office.

The letter was forwarded to the Michigan Attorney General's Office and the letter is now being reviewed before it makes a recommendation to Governor Snyder.

If Rand doesn't resign, he can only be removed by a recall election or by Governor Snyder.
